Notes for homeowners and drivers
Reading about locks is not most people's idea of a good evening, so we have kept these pieces short. Each one answers a single question clearly, from how to keep a lock working through a cold snap to what to think about before adding a keypad at the office.

Can you get me in if my smart lock has died?
Yes, usually. Backup access on a keypad or app-controlled deadbolt depends on the model. Many carry small external terminals that wake the lock when a fresh nine-volt battery is touched to them, long enough to enter your code; some also keep a conventional keyed override behind a cover, which a locksmith can pick or decode like any other cylinder, while other current models have no cylinder at all and rely only on their own recovery method. Once inside, the batteries are replaced and your codes are checked. Home Lockout Service
What should I have ready when I call?
The address and unit number, which door you are outside, what the lock looks like, and where the keys are: with someone, lost, broken or simply refusing. Say whether there is an alarm or a card reader on the door, who can disarm or confirm your authority, and whether the building has a property manager. If you can send a photo of the lock and the door edge, the right cylinders and cores come on the first trip. Business Lockout Service
My key is a restricted or high-security type. Can it still be extracted and replaced?
Extraction is the same careful process; the keyway is usually narrower and the cuts more complex, so it takes longer. The replacement key is different: restricted blanks are cut only from the system's records, so have the authorization card that was supplied with the system to hand, or the locksmith who installed it is contacted. Until then the spare, if you have one, keeps the door working. Broken Key Extraction
Can a split jamb be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Many can be repaired. A split along the grain is pressed back together, glued with a two-part wood epoxy and held by a steel repair plate or a boxed strike screwed through it into the stud, so the fasteners reinforce the repair as well as the lock. Missing wood is built up with filler or a fitted piece. A jamb that has pulled off the framing along its length or shattered around the pocket is replaced by a carpenter, with the opening secured until then. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks
My locks are different brands. Is that a problem?
Not a problem, just a detail to plan around. What matters is the keyway, meaning the profile of the slot the key fits, rather than the name on the lock. Different makers sometimes share a profile and sometimes do not. Where two cylinders cannot accept the same key, one is exchanged for a compatible cylinder in the same finish and pinned to match. From the outside the door looks the same and from your pocket it is one key. Lock Rekeying
What happens during the visit, step by step?
The locksmith looks at the door, frame, glass and hinges, measures the bore and backset, and confirms the hardware and key plan with you. The door is bored or the old lock removed, the bolt is set to the backset, and the cylinder and thumb-turn are assembled. The strike position is marked from the bolt itself, the pocket bored, and a reinforced strike fastened into the framing. Everything is tested open and closed, keys are cut and tried, and the area is vacuumed. Deadbolt Installation
Can I stop people copying my house key?
A restricted keyway helps with that. The key blanks are controlled by the manufacturer and its authorised locksmiths, so a copy generally requires the card, record or authorisation the program uses, cutting down on copies made at an ordinary kiosk. It suits homes where keys are lent to cleaners, contractors or tenants. The cylinders are fitted in the normal way, and you keep the key card safe because it is what future copies depend on. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Which parts usually need replacing?
Springs, first and foremost: the latch spring, the hub spring that returns the knob, and the small springs on the deadbolt levers. After that, the spindle and knob set screws, a hub whose square has worn round, a worn deadbolt lever or follower, and on later locks the cylinder set screw or the cylinder itself. Bolts, cases and trim are almost always kept, cleaned and refitted rather than replaced. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

What is a relocker, and does it change how the safe is opened?
A relocker is a small device inside some safes built to jam the bolt work until a trained technician services it, if the case is drilled in the wrong spot, dropped, or exposed to fire, as a defence against forced entry. If one has tripped, the fix is mechanical: freeing or replacing the relocking mechanism, rather than another attempt at the combination. Recognizing a tripped relocker early changes the plan from the first visit rather than after several failed attempts. Safe Opening & Combination Change
How much weight does a filled safe put on the floor?
It depends entirely on the unit's size and construction, since the steel body itself usually weighs far more than whatever ends up inside it. A small document safe and a large commercial unit sit at very different points on that scale. Confirming the safe's own weight before delivery, and checking it against the floor it will sit on, is part of the assessment rather than something guessed at on arrival. Is a high security cylinder really pick proof?
Nothing is beyond a laboratory with unlimited time, so the honest measure is minutes, not absolutes. Rated cylinders are tested to resist skilled picking and impressioning for a set period, and drilling and forcing for another. In the real world that matters because someone at a door has seconds, not a workbench. The sidebar and false grooves in the pins give a picker nothing reliable to feel, and the hardened inserts stop a bit, which is why these attacks move on to easier doors. High Security Locks

Can the aluminum storefront door on our unit be rekeyed?
Yes. The narrow stile of a storefront door houses a screw-in mortise cylinder secured from the edge, and it unthreads, is repinned and screws back in like any other. What the locksmith watches is the cam: it has to suit the hook or deadbolt mechanism inside the door and sit at the correct depth, or the bolt throws short. Weather-facing cylinders showing salt wear are pointed out so you can decide on replacement. Commercial Rekeying
Can key duplication be restricted so copies cannot be cut elsewhere?
Yes. With a restricted or patented keyway, blanks are only available through the manufacturer's authorized record, so a copy is not cut at an ordinary hardware counter without going through that channel. This does not make a key impossible to duplicate, but every legitimate copy passes through a record the owner controls, which a standard keyway cannot offer. Master Key System Design
Is a keypad code as secure as a card or fob?
A keypad code needs no card to lose, but a code shared among several people is effectively no longer individual, and a forgotten code left active is a common weak point. A card or fob tied to one named person avoids that particular issue, since it is switched off individually rather than reset for everyone at once. Many businesses use a code for general areas and a card wherever entry needs to be traceable to one person. Access Control Installation
How high should the crossbar or touchpad be mounted?
Exit-device makers publish a mounting range for their own models, and in practice a crossbar or touchpad sits no higher than about 1200 mm above the finished floor. The locksmith sets the hardware inside the maker's range and below that ceiling, allowing for anyone in the space who needs a lower reach, a wheelchair user or a shorter staff member among them. Car Keys
Can you open a pickup, a motorcycle, a trailer or a motorhome?
Yes. Trucks and vans often have a separate cargo or tailgate lock, motorhomes use household-style cylinders on their living-space doors, trailers and hitch locks are padlock-type hardware, and motorcycle seat and steering locks are small wafer cylinders. Say what the vehicle is when you call so the right picks and blanks are in the van, and expect the same authorisation check for each. Car Lockout Service
Can a key be made for an older car with no chip?
Yes, for a vehicle that genuinely has no immobilizer, checked by VIN and equipment rather than assumed from age, since several early-2000s vehicles already shipped with a factory immobilizer and coded key. Where that is the case, it is the simplest key work there is: a blade cut to the factory code from the VIN or to a reading of the door lock, rather than copied from a worn original. If the ignition has become sloppy, the locksmith can rebuild it in the same visit. Car Key Replacement
How is the electronic chip handled during duplication?
Where the transponder supports it, the chip in the working key is read and its data cloned onto a fresh chip, sometimes with vehicle-specific data pulled from the car to help. Where cloning is not supported for that particular vehicle and chip, the locksmith instead connects through the diagnostic port and has the car's own security module enrol a freshly coded chip as a new, independently authorized key. Spare Car Key Duplication
If I lose a fob, will whoever finds it still be able to use my car?
Yes, until that fob's electronic authorization is specifically removed following that vehicle's procedure, which is why reporting a lost fob matters even when a spare already covers the gap at home. On many vehicles the removal touches only that one fob and leaves the rest working as before; on others every credential is relearned as part of the same procedure. A mechanical blade built into the lost fob can still open an unchanged door lock until that lock is separately rekeyed. Key Fob Programming
