Request a visit

In plain words

Different locks call for different openings, and a lockout visit starts by reading the hardware on your door. A spring latch in a knob or lever behaves differently from a deadbolt, a mortise lock in an older home has its own internals, and a high-security cylinder resists shortcuts that work on builder-grade hardware. A smart lock adds batteries and, on many models, a hidden keyed override, though some key-free designs rely instead on their own backup power, codes or app access. Knowing which is in front of them lets the locksmith pick, decode or bypass the mechanism, keeping the lock intact rather than reaching for a drill.

Sound familiar?

Someone pushed the privacy button on the bathroom door and pulled it shut behind them, leaving the room locked and empty. The little emergency slot on the outside is stripped, and the tiny release key that came with the handle disappeared years ago.

How the visit goes

Illustrative locksmith scene
  1. 1

Anything already damaged, and anyone inside

Two practical questions round out the first look. First, has anything been tried already? A bent latch from a credit card, a scratched cylinder from a screwdriver, or a previous locksmith's drill mark all change the approach, and the locksmith notes them so you know what was there before work began. Second, is anyone or anything inside that changes the pace: a child napping, a pet, a stove left on, a running tap? That answer sets how the opening is sequenced and whether the most careful method or the most direct one comes first. Both questions take moments and make the rest of the visit calmer.

  2. 2

    Relieving a bound door

When the bolt is jammed against the strike because the door has swollen or sagged, picking achieves nothing until the pressure comes off. The locksmith lifts or leans on the door to bring the bolt back into line with its pocket while the key or pick turns the cylinder, and the bolt slides home. With the door open, the cause is addressed so it does not lock you out again: tightening or shimming a hinge that let the door drop, dressing the strike pocket so the bolt has room, or trimming a weatherstrip that pushes the door out of square. The lock was never the problem; the door simply moved around it.

  3. 3

    Looking after the cylinder afterwards

A lock that has just been opened deserves a little care so it keeps turning sweetly. Twice a year, follow your lock's own maintenance guidance: many residential cylinders take a puff of dry graphite or PTFE lubricant into the keyway, some a specified liquid product instead; general-purpose oil sprays attract dust and gum the pins. Wipe grit off your keys before using them, and retire a key that has worn thin or bent, cutting a new one from the code or from a crisp original rather than from a tired copy. If the key starts to need a wiggle to turn, that is the cylinder asking for attention early, while it is still an easy fix rather than a lockout.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

Any upgrade you choose while the locksmith is there

Some people use the visit to move to a heavier deadbolt, a reinforced strike, a keypad or a lockbox. None of it is required to get you inside; each option is priced as a separate line.

  2. 2

    Keying other doors to match

Bringing the back door, side door and garage onto the new key after a rekey is extra work per cylinder, and simplest to arrange during the same call-out.

  3. 3

    Time of the call

A home lockout costs the same amount whatever the hour, weekend or holiday included, since locksmiths are reachable day and night. The exact figure is confirmed at the door once the lock, the door and how many locks need opening have been looked at in person.

Same fees day, night or weekend.

Home Lockout Service: questions

Advice · (289) 212-7829

Can you get me in if my smart lock has died?

Yes, usually. Backup access on a keypad or app-controlled deadbolt depends on the model. Many carry small external terminals that wake the lock when a fresh nine-volt battery is touched to them, long enough to enter your code; some also keep a conventional keyed override behind a cover, which a locksmith can pick or decode like any other cylinder, while other current models have no cylinder at all and rely only on their own recovery method. Once inside, the batteries are replaced and your codes are checked.

When does a locksmith decide to drill instead of pick?

Drilling is the last rung, reached only when the cylinder has genuinely stopped cooperating. Typical reasons are a plug seized by corrosion or a failed spring, a key snapped deep inside that blocks the pins, a high-security cylinder whose anti-pick features make picking impractical, or a lock already damaged by someone's earlier attempt. The decision is explained before the drill comes out, the hole is confined to the cylinder, and replacement hardware goes in straight afterwards.

I rent my place. Can I call a locksmith myself?

Yes. A tenant locked out of their own unit can arrange entry directly, and the identification check is the same: something that ties you to the address, such as a lease, a bill or a piece of mail, plus photo identification. Where you may want to involve your landlord is any change to the lock afterwards, because tenancy rules in this province expect landlords and tenants to agree on lock changes and to share keys. A locksmith can note what was done for the building manager.

What the census means at the door

42%

Homes of every age. About 42% of homes in Uxbridge were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

In an area where homes span several eras, one street may have original mortise locks and the next builder-grade cylinders. A locksmith working here carries parts for both, so whichever door he meets, the job finishes in one visit.

81%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 81% of homes in Uxbridge (2021 Census).

In areas of single houses, the door nobody watches is the side or back entry. It often has the weakest lock on the property. Fitting a proper deadbolt and a reinforced strike there is a modest job that closes the obvious gap.
