In plain words

Being locked out is uncomfortable, but it is also the moment most households finally sort out their keys. Once the door is open, the same visit can rekey the locks so a lost key stops mattering, cut properly coded spares to replace worn copies, key the front and back doors alike so one key runs the house, or set up a small lockbox for a trusted neighbour. None of that is required to get you inside; the opening stands on its own. It is simply that the locksmith is already at the door with the tools, which makes it a convenient time to decide.

Sound familiar?

After a week of humid weather the back door has swollen in its frame. The key turns, you can feel the bolt trying to move, but it is jammed hard against the strike plate and the door refuses to open.

How the visit goes

Illustrative locksmith scene — Goodwood
  1. 1

Is it the lock or the door?

A surprising number of lockouts are really door problems. The locksmith checks how the door sits in its frame: whether it has dropped on tired hinges, swollen with summer humidity, or shrunk in dry winter air so that the bolt no longer lines up with its pocket in the strike plate. A hand on the door while the key is turned often reveals the bolt binding against the strike rather than a failed cylinder. Sorting this out first matters because a door that is pinched in its frame needs pressure relieved, not a lock picked, and the fix afterwards is a strike adjustment or a hinge screw rather than new hardware.

  2. 2

    Freeing a frozen cylinder

Ice is handled with patience rather than force. The locksmith applies a lock de-icer or warms the cylinder face gently so the meltwater inside turns back to liquid and drains, then works the key or a pick in small movements until the plug turns freely. Hot water is never poured on the lock, because it refreezes in the keyway and can crack a cold cylinder. Once open, the cylinder is dried and given the lubricant that model's maker approves, a dry graphite, PTFE or specified liquid product, applied sparingly since too much can gum the mechanism. If the door itself had frozen to its weatherstripping, that seal is cleared and checked too.

  3. 3

A door that locks the way it should

The visit ends with the lock working smoothly from both sides. The locksmith cycles the key several times, throws and retracts the bolt with the door open and then closed, and listens for the clean click of the bolt seating in the strike. You are shown anything that was noticed along the way, such as a loose handle or a strike screw backing out, so nothing is left as a mystery. Any hardware that was replaced is demonstrated and the packaging left with you. The door is closed and locked once more with your own key before the locksmith leaves, so you see for yourself that you are back in control of it.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Electronic lock work

A dead smart lock may need batteries, a reset, reprogramming of codes or pairing to your phone once the door is open. Each of those is a small task that the quote names separately.

  2. 2

    Restricted or high-security keyways

Security pins, sidebars and patented keyways take longer to open and, if replaced, cost more as hardware than a standard cylinder. Restricted keys also have to be cut from the system's records rather than duplicated.

  3. 3

    Drilling and a replacement cylinder

If the cylinder has to be drilled, the quote gains the new cylinder or complete deadbolt and the labour to fit it. You are told this before the drill comes out, never after.

Home Lockout Service: questions

Advice · (289) 212-7829

Can you get me in if my smart lock has died?

Yes, usually. Backup access on a keypad or app-controlled deadbolt depends on the model. Many carry small external terminals that wake the lock when a fresh nine-volt battery is touched to them, long enough to enter your code; some also keep a conventional keyed override behind a cover, which a locksmith can pick or decode like any other cylinder, while other current models have no cylinder at all and rely only on their own recovery method. Once inside, the batteries are replaced and your codes are checked.

When does a locksmith decide to drill instead of pick?

Drilling is the last rung, reached only when the cylinder has genuinely stopped cooperating. Typical reasons are a plug seized by corrosion or a failed spring, a key snapped deep inside that blocks the pins, a high-security cylinder whose anti-pick features make picking impractical, or a lock already damaged by someone's earlier attempt. The decision is explained before the drill comes out, the hole is confined to the cylinder, and replacement hardware goes in straight afterwards.

I rent my place. Can I call a locksmith myself?

Yes. A tenant locked out of their own unit can arrange entry directly, and the identification check is the same: something that ties you to the address, such as a lease, a bill or a piece of mail, plus photo identification. Where you may want to involve your landlord is any change to the lock afterwards, because tenancy rules in this province expect landlords and tenants to agree on lock changes and to share keys. A locksmith can note what was done for the building manager.

What the census means at the door

42%

Homes of every age. About 42% of homes in Uxbridge were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Mixed housing ages mean the advice changes door by door. An older solid-wood entry may want a strike reinforced; a newer steel door may want its short strike screws swapped. The locksmith looks at the door in front of him rather than assuming.

81%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 81% of homes in Uxbridge (2021 Census).

Detached homes are exposed to weather on every side, so exterior locks see rain, salt and freezing air directly. Choosing hardware with a good finish and a cylinder that tolerates cold, then lubricating it properly, keeps every door turning through winter.
