Locked out
Safely, right now
- Wait somewhere safe and warm: a neighbour's, your car, a coffee shop.
- Don't break a window or pry the door. It adds damage without getting you in sooner.
- Keep ID that shows your address handy if it is with you.
Key broke in the lock
Safely, right now
- Don't push the broken piece back in or try the lock again.
- Keep the piece you still have. It helps cut a new key.
Lock won't turn
Safely, right now
- Don't force the key. A bent or broken key makes it harder.
- Don't spray oil or glue into it, and don't pour hot water on it in the cold.
Lost keys
Safely, right now
- If your address was with the keys, treat the lock as known to whoever finds them.
- Don't leave a spare key anywhere outside while you wait, under the mat or elsewhere.
A lock problem is rarely only a lock problem. It is a door that swells shut in a damp week, a key that snapped on a cold morning, a tenant who left without handing anything back. In Uxbridge we listen first, explain the options, and do tidy work you can see before we drive off. Nearby, we also work in Roseville, Sandford and Siloam.

The fix, explained · Uxbridge
What is the door doing?
EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceYou reached the front step with the groceries, patted every pocket twice, and the house key is simply not there.
The fix
Different locks call for different openings, and a lockout visit starts by reading the hardware on your door. A spring latch in a knob or lever behaves differently from a deadbolt, a mortise lock in an older home has its own internals, and a high-security cylinder resists shortcuts that work on builder-grade hardware.
EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceA cook stepped into the alley with the recycling and the rear door swung shut behind him.
The fix
Authority for a business is a question about the company, not just the individual at the door. An owner shows identification and something connecting them to the premises, such as the lease or the business registration.
EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThe apartment key snapped mid-turn, leaving the cylinder twisted halfway between locked and open.
The fix
Broken key extraction is the removal of a snapped key piece from a lock so it can go back to work. It is done with slim hooks and spiral extractors that slide into the keyway beside the fragment, catch the cuts in the blade and draw it out the way it went in.
EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairSomeone smashed the little window beside the door, reached in and turned the thumb-turn.
The fix
A break-in repair happens alongside a police file and an insurance claim, and a good locksmith keeps both in mind. Before any hardware is moved the damage is photographed as found: door face, edge, strike, jamb, hinges and glass.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe lock works, but only if you lean on the door with your hip while turning the key.
The fix
A lock rarely seizes without warning. It asks for a wiggle, then a firmer wiggle, then it needs the door pulled toward you, and one morning it stops.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyYour purse was taken from the back of a chair at a restaurant.
The fix
If you rent, losing a key is handled in three steps rather than one. Tell your landlord first, since a lock change on a rented unit goes smoother when both sides know about it and both end up with a working key.

What the census means at the door
42%
Homes of every age. About 42% of homes in Uxbridge were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
In an area where homes span several eras, one street may have original mortise locks and the next builder-grade cylinders. A locksmith working here carries parts for both, so whichever door he meets, the job finishes in one visit.
81%
Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 81% of homes in Uxbridge (2021 Census).
In areas of single houses, the door nobody watches is the side or back entry. It often has the weakest lock on the property. Fitting a proper deadbolt and a reinforced strike there is a modest job that closes the obvious gap.

Book a lock repair in Uxbridge
We treat the whole door in Uxbridge, not just the cylinder. Hinges that have sagged, a strike plate held by short screws, a frame that has moved with the seasons: these decide whether a lock holds, and they are checked on every visit. Sometimes the right advice is a longer screw and a shim rather than a new lock, and we say so.
Identity checked, politely. For openings and key work we confirm you have the right to be there. We explain why we ask, and we ask everyone.
Work you can watch. There is nothing hidden about what we do. Stand beside us, ask questions, and we will show you what the lock looks like inside.
Clean hands, clean floor. We put down a mat where there is drilling, wipe the hardware down and leave the area as we found it, only with a working lock.

Which fix fits?
IfSomeone forced the door and the frame is split.
ThenFrame repair, a new strike and a fresh cylinder.
The wood is rebuilt before new hardware goes in, so the door locks tonight.
IfThey came in through a window, but your spare keys were on the hook.
ThenRekey every lock those keys operate.
Anything those keys open needs new pins: house, garage and shed, and a taken car key should be deprogrammed.
IfThere are fresh tool marks around the lock but nobody got in.
ThenA security check of that door and the others.
We look at what held and suggest reinforcements that make a second attempt pointless.
IfMinus twenty outside, the fob button does nothing, and the door keyhole has a crust of road salt over it because you have not used a metal key in that car…
Every replacement key starts with a simple question: is this your car to key?
Locksmith FAQ
Is a key stuck in the lock the same problem as a jammed lock?
They are close relatives. A key that will not come out is usually a plug that has not returned to its neutral position with the shell, a cylinder cap that has loosened, debris in the keyway, or a cylinder that is pinned incorrectly; some cylinders are also designed to hold the key until the plug is returned. The locksmith frees the key first, without pulling, then treats the cause the same way as any seized cylinder.
Will a new lock fit the holes already in my door?
Usually, yes. Most residential doors are prepared to standard sizes, a 54 millimetre cross bore and a backset of 60 or 70 millimetres, and most modern hardware adjusts between those backsets. The locksmith measures before choosing, so the new lock is matched to the door rather than the other way around. Where an older mortise lock or an unusual bore is found, filler plates, extension kits or a carefully jigged new bore bring the door to standard.
Can a modern cylinder be fitted to my old mortise lock?
Often, on cases that already take a threaded cylinder. Mortise cylinders are made in standard thread sizes and lengths with different cam shapes, and a new one is selected to match the case and the door thickness. That gives you keys cut on a machine and the option of keying the door alike with the rest of the house. A bit-key case has no cylinder to swap; its keys are made on the bench instead.
What is a good option for a gate that delivery drivers or a maintenance crew need occasional access to?
A keypad or a lockbox with a rotating code works well there, since access can be shared without handing out a physical key that has to come back later. A weather-rated cylinder with a separate access key is another option if the property already runs on a keyed system. The locksmith can talk through how often the code should change and who on site should know it, so the gate stays convenient without staying open to everyone.
