In plain words

Upgrading to high security rarely means new doors or a big disruption. Many high security cylinders retrofit into the existing deadbolt or lever, so the door preparation stays as it is and only the cylinder and keys change. A heavier deadbolt uses the same bore as the old one in most cases. The strike and hinge screws are swapped for long ones that bite into the framing. The visible difference afterwards is small; the practical difference is that the door resists the tools and tricks that defeat ordinary hardware, and that nobody can copy your key without you knowing.

Sound familiar?

You run a home office with client files and equipment, and your insurer has asked what kind of lock is on the door. The honest answer is the builder's knob lock and a light deadbolt from when the house was new.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

Matching the rating to the risk

Ratings are only useful if someone explains them. A residential deadbolt carries a hardware grade for security, durability and finish based on hammer blows, pulling force and cycle testing. A high-security cylinder carries a separate laboratory listing based on how many minutes it resists picking, drilling and forcing. The locksmith explains what each figure means in practice for your door and points out the rule that matters most: the whole assembly takes the grade of its weakest part. That conversation ends with a recommendation you understand rather than a part number you have to trust.

  2. 2

    Keying several doors sensibly

When more than one door is upgraded, the locksmith plans the keying before pinning anything. A home usually wants every exterior door on one key. A business often wants staff keys that open the front and their own area, and one manager key that opens everything, arranged as a small master system on the same patented keyway. Cylinders are pinned on the bench, labelled and fitted door by door, and each key is checked against the doors it should open and, just as carefully, the doors it should not. The written key schedule is part of the handover.

  3. 3

Proof for insurers, landlords and tenants

You leave with a written record of what was fitted: the cylinder type and its rating, the deadbolt grade, the strike and screws installed, and the key system registration. Insurers sometimes ask for this when a policy specifies stronger hardware, landlords keep it in the property file, and tenants have something to hand back at move-out. It also helps the next locksmith, who can see at a glance what keyway and format the doors carry. Keep the invoice and the key control documents together; they are the paperwork side of a physical upgrade.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Distance and access

A rural property, a high-rise with loading dock rules or a site that must be visited outside trading hours affects travel and scheduling, and the quote says so plainly.

  2. 2

    Mortise and older doors

An existing mortise pocket, a thick slab door or an unusual backset can mean a specific cylinder or an adapted preparation, which takes longer than a standard bore.

  3. 3

    Key control level

A patented keyway with authorisation cards covers most homes. Geographically exclusive keyways and signature-controlled systems for businesses carry registration and administration that show in the quote.

High Security Locks: questions

Advice · (289) 212-7829

Is a high security cylinder really pick proof?

Nothing is beyond a laboratory with unlimited time, so the honest measure is minutes, not absolutes. Rated cylinders are tested to resist skilled picking and impressioning for a set period, and drilling and forcing for another. In the real world that matters because someone at a door has seconds, not a workbench. The sidebar and false grooves in the pins give a picker nothing reliable to feel, and the hardened inserts stop a bit, which is why these attacks move on to easier doors.

Can a hardware store or kiosk copy my new key?

No. The blank for a patented keyway is distributed only through the manufacturer's network to locksmiths who hold the system, and the side milling or angled cuts need a machine set up for that line. A kiosk would have neither the blank nor the cut. Extra keys come through your locksmith, cut from code, once an authorised person has approved the order. That routine is a small inconvenience compared with never knowing who has a copy.

Is a smart lock more secure than a high security mechanical lock?

They solve different problems. A keypad or smart lock manages who can enter and when, and many have no keyway to pick. A high security mechanical lock resists physical attack and controls key copying without batteries, apps or connectivity. Many businesses use both: electronic access on high-traffic doors and high security cylinders on rooms that must hold regardless of power. The locksmith helps you match the tool to each door rather than choosing one philosophy.

What the census means at the door

42%

Homes of every age. About 42% of homes in Uxbridge were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

In an area where homes span several eras, one street may have original mortise locks and the next builder-grade cylinders. A locksmith working here carries parts for both, so whichever door he meets, the job finishes in one visit.

81%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 81% of homes in Uxbridge (2021 Census).

In areas of single houses, the door nobody watches is the side or back entry. It often has the weakest lock on the property. Fitting a proper deadbolt and a reinforced strike there is a modest job that closes the obvious gap.
